A ceramic lamp inspired by the form of the Sacred Heart, a powerful Baroque symbol.
We first modeled the shape in clay and then created a plaster mold from it. Using this plaster mold, we cast the form again in clay. Once the piece was completed, we carefully refined and smoothed the surface before glazing it.
The most interesting and meaningful part of the project for us was the application of gold leaf to the upper flame.
First, we applied Armenian bole — a fine red clay traditionally used as a base for gilding. Then, using rabbit-skin glue, we adhered the brass gold leaf (gold-toned metal leaf) to the surface.
Finally, the gilded area was burnished and polished using an agate stone and a wild boar tooth, enhancing the shine and depth of the gold finish.
